Tell us about yourself

My name is Catalin Ene and my main hobby is photography. I have practiced photography for already 10 years when I bought my first camera by “mistake”. I say by mistake as at that time, my girlfriend (my wife now) wanted to do an upgrade from his photo bridge camera to a Canon DSLR, with the money she got from her mother. She spent all the money intended to be used for the new DSLR and couldn’t buy anything. But, the camera had to be bought, and what to do next? So I decided to buy a DSLR camera with my money and the choice at that time was a Nikon D5100. After that, I started to experience different types of photography in areas such as portrait, landscape, and even newborn or wedding photography. I began to focus more on landscape photography about 2 years ago when I felt that I had to change something. I felt that my landscape photos did not have very good quality and did not tell something, a story to a viewer. I started to study more in this area for example photography composition, how to edit landscape photos and what are the core rules in order to obtain a high-quality photo. In terms of traveling, I started to visit new places in Romania or across borders. I went hiking or I stayed in a tent. I knew that if you want to capture beautiful moments at sunset or sunrise, you have to be there at the right time, in nature. I found out that nature is my inspiration and it is amazing when you are at sunset or sunrise in amazing locations. We have a beautiful planet and we have to love it and take care of it.

Why do you travel and photograph your journeys?

I like to travel as nature relaxes me and I feel good when I am outside in nature. I think that any photograph expresses a place or a moment in a very different way. That’s why I like to photograph places that maybe are not known by everyone. But a different composition or a different perspective about a landscape location makes that place to be different.

What is your favourite thing or item to photograph

My favorites of mine are the mountains and the sea, but they are very different in terms of photography with cons and pros. In the mountains, you could find the light that you cannot see at the seaside for example. In the mountains now it can be overcast, but a few hours later at the sunset, you could find rays of sun with a dramatic sky. I also like to photos at the seaside where you could capture the sea with a long exposure shoot.

What’s your go-to travel hack?

Scout your location where you are going to shoot. Make research for the places you are going to photos and take into consideration the perfect time to take pictures there: at sunrise or sunset.

Got any gear you can’t travel without?

The first would be the camera and the second my tripod. Of course there may be a bottle of water, required clothes, sunglasses , but the photography is the main reason I like to travel.

What destination are you eager to go back to?

I will love to visit again Dolomites and Tuscany. These locations are amazing and there are lots of places that I haven’t enough time to visit.

How do you stay safe when you’re travelling?

When I travel or hike, I try to stay safe as much as possible. I am adventurous but I always plan a hike with all the required things: water, some food, clothes for cold and rain, a map, headlamp. I am documenting the location I am going to visit, I check the amount of time to reach the respective point and return back, so I will not have any issues.

What’s the best way to experience a destination like a local one?

Go to locations that are not very popular. For example in Romania, more exactly in Maramures or Bucovina, there are villages where you can eat traditional food at a very low price, you can have a sleigh ride, horse carriage ride or you can listen to carols if you go there in December.

What’s your favourite word in another language?

Hello or hi

When and where are you next travelling?

Next year, I will go to Spain, Tenerife.
