Nicky Omohundro is the founder of LittleFamilyAdventure.com, an active family lifestyle and travel website that encourages families to get outdoors and have #nochildleftinside.

Nicky started her website when her children were very young. Now as a mom of three teenagers, Nicky often jokes that she is the “little” in her website name as her children as all taller than she is. She regularly shares tips on getting families active outside, family travel destinations, and home kitchens and camping recipes. Many of the recipes she shares are based on her family’s travels.

Based in Oklahoma City, Nicky and her family are a busy lot. You’ll often find her with coffee in hand planning another trip in between school and work schedules. Always up for something new, Nicky’s mantra is “Adventure starts with a single step.”

Why do you travel?

I grew up travelling as a child and have done the same with my children. It’s as normal to us as signing up for summer sports. It’s just what we do! We travel as a family to share experiences, see new places, eat new food, and spend quality time together.

What’s your go-to travel hack?

Remember that you can’t see and do everything on a vacation. Avoid the temptation to plan for everything and pack your schedule with all the things. There is nothing worse than an over-stimulated, tired, cranky child on vacation. When you are planning your trip, schedule free time into your itinerary. Sometimes these “free times” are when the best moments happen.

What are your top tips for travelling with families?

Allow your children to help plan a portion of your trip. Even at a young age, they can provide input on what kinds of activities they would like to do. Older children and teens can help assist you with research or planning. Having input helps them get excited about the trip, gives them something to look forward to, and can affect their behavior (in a positive way).

Got any gear you can’t travel without?

Portable power bank, Aquavault Flexsafe for valuables, and packing cubes. When the kids were little, we always brought along window gel clings and small bottles of bubbles when we were touring. It was a great distraction and activity.

How do you and your family stay safe and healthy when travelling?

We stay physically safe by being attentive to our surroundings. If staying in a resort or hotel, we will ask the front desk staff or concierge for information on the local area, when read between the lines. To stay healthy, we limit junk food and stay hydrated. I always carry a bag of homeopathic supplements that cover everything from sore muscles to the onset of flu symptoms.

What’s the best way to experience a destination like a local?

Instead of tourist spots, head to areas frequented by locals. Strike up a conversation and talk to people about what they recommend.

What’s your favourite word in another language?

Gezellig is a Dutch word that means many things depending on context. I usually use it to say cozy, fun, and friendly.

What is your favourite thing to do with your family while travelling?

My favorite thing is to find a local trail, nature path, or art walk.

When and where are you next travelling?

As a family, we are heading to San Antonio, Texas in August. Solo, I am heading to Alaska in September.
