Hi, I’m Jamie -a stay-at-home mom of four, wife-for-life, jack-of-all trades, trying to ‘fly by the seat of my pants’ through all the chaos of family life. I started traveling standby with my kids in 2011. After over 300 flights, I have tried-and-true tips, experiences, and family-friendly itineraries for every mom hoping to create beautiful memories with her kids. I hope to inspire families to take the kids to see the world and give them tools to create time, energy, and money to make it happen.

Why do you travel?

I travel to fulfill the basic human need to experience the new and unique. I love to use my travel time to fully connect with my kids and spouse away from the daily grind. Traveling bring awe and wonder into my heart.

What’s your go-to travel hack?

Pack your family by day… not by person. So put all the family swimsuits together. All the clothing for Monday together, etc. This makes it easier to go swimming when everything is together.

What are your top tips for travelling with families?

RELAX, your kids will feed of your anxiousness and stress. They will behave better when they see that you are having fun. Make the airport and airplane time a time of connection and love. It is part of the trip, too!

Got any gear you can’t travel without?

Motion Sickness pills for my baby, MyPillow travel size, USB triple wall outlet, Mifold

How do you and your family stay safe and healthy when travelling?

Wash hands and wear a mask. Move in the great outdoors.

What’s the best way to experience a destination like a local?

Stay with family or friends to see how life in the area. They know the hidden gems for food and fun.

What’s your favourite word in another language?

Gambatte! It is Japanese. You yell it out to someone who is working hard or doing good. IT is suppose to encourage them in their work. And when the work is complete you say “Otsukaresama”. The direct translation means “you are a tired person” but basically it means – you’re a hard worker and I respect you!

What is your favourite thing to do with your family while travelling?

Outdoor hiking and adventures. Rock bouldering, rock skipping, river wading and mountain climbing.

When and where are you next travelling?

Next week for Spring Break we head to west Texas and Big Bend National Park. We will explore some small cities along the way and enjoy hiking through the park.
