We are Lisa & Dave of Basic Travel Couple, from Buffalo, NY. We recently got married on June 12 and are now spending 6 weeks exploring the world by utilizing travel reward points and miles from our credit cards. We have traveled to Maldives and Dubai and will continue to Jordan, Turkey, Croatia, and then head over to Europe! We have a yearning for traveling for less but also experiencing high-quality resorts at a fraction of the cost.
Why do you travel and look for adventures?
We travel for experiences and to meet people! Growing up we never had the opportunities to travel, now we have made travel a priority in our lives. It has challenged us with experiences and growth we never could have had without it. Travel also with a new understanding of people and cultures. You learn from mishaps and grow stronger mentally. It’s also incredible to see places in person you have seen in photos or on TV. Travel makes us better people and we love meeting new friends from all over the world.
What kind of adventures do you look for when you travel?
Anything! We love seeking our unique opportunities to show others what is out there and love a good adrenaline rush! We have jumped out of airplanes, learned how to scuba dive, swam with sharks, slept in a glass igloo, chased the northern lights, hiked mountains, and then we’ve also spent days relaxing and enjoying nature. We are always up for any type of adventure.
What’s your go-to travel hack?
Credit card reward points! If you are in the states- it is by far the easiest way for us to accumulate points and travel for almost free. We rarely pay full price for flights and hotels and can travel to wherever we want to go! We created a course to teach others on how to travel like we do.
Got any gear you can’t travel without?
Portable charger! We have one that has 2 USB ports and lasts up to 5 full charges. It’s helped tremendously when we are abroad and on the go to charge up multiple devices – cameras, cell phones, watches- whatever!
What destination are you eager to go back to?
The Galápagos Islands! I broke my leg in 5 places the last day we were there, so we missed out on a few activities we had planned. It was a careless mishap on my behalf, but the place is incredible, with great people and food. It also had the best wildlife!
How do you stay safe when you’re travelling?
Staying together, and being aware of our surroundings. We try to pack minimally and only bring a carry on so we can be on the go. Also, there is a lot of research beforehand to see where to go and what to do or avoid. Also looking into travel insurance if there are any mishaps along your journey, or understanding countries rules – like if they offer free healthcare.
What’s the best way to experience a destination like a local?
Talk to locals! Make friends and keep an open schedule/open mind to be up for whatever. We like having plans of things to do, but also some of the best times we’ve had traveling was when we talked with locals and made friends with them.
What’s your favourite word in another language?
Dave says Siesta as he likes to take naps, I’ll go with Te Amo.
When and where are you next travelling?
We are travelling right now on a 6-week honeymoon! The Maldives was the first destination, we are currently in Dubai and head to Turkey and Croatia after.
